But this practice is really irritating for those coming on your website and most of the visitors tend to leave the webpage, once they see these annoying pop up ads.
2) Irrelevant Search Engine Ranking
There are various landing pages that appear on search results for irrelevant keywords and this may happen due to the discrepancies in the optimization of those pages. Seeing an irrelevant landing page for user search queries, surely results in the user leaving the page without moving further.
3) Irrelevant Audience
If you are targeting your website or webpage on an irrelevant audience, your website would not be getting any decent page visits as most of the visitors would leave without visiting any other pages other than the landing pages. This mainly happens in social media marketing where your website and it pages are promoted among irrelevant audience.
4) A Badly Designed Landing Page
A landing page is one of the most important thing that a user gets after searching for something on the search engines and if the design of the landing page is not good enough to hold the visitors, then the visitors would surely exit the page very fast.
5) Non Focused Marketing Campaigns
Either it be paid search marketing campaigns or social media campaigns, the campaigns should be focused in a better way as to get more conversion. Failing to do this, result in the visitors showing no interest in a particular landing page and leaving the page soon.
6) Higher Page Load Time
The major search engines especially Google has especially specified before how importance it gives to a website’s load time while determining its search engine rankings. Similar is the case of load time when it comes with a user point of view and the website which takes too much time to load would not be able to hold its visitors back and visitors naturally exits from such web pages.
7) Links to External Websites Opening in the Same Window
Most of the websites might have links which are pointing to some other external websites and this is not at all a bad practice. But most of us do the serious error of opening the external links in the same window, rather than opening it in an external window. By not allowing the links to open in an external window, we are prompting the visitors to leave our webpage without returning back.
8) Music on the website
There are many website which provides music upon the loading of a webpage and many of us do it to impress the audience. But the fact is that websites having music on its page naturally have a higher bounce rate as most of the users might not be comfortable with the music and leave the page as soon as they hear the music.
9) Streaming Videos on the Website
Streaming videos on the website might sound a good idea, but in the normal case the videos take its own time to load and the most of the visitors would not be interested in the same, resulting in an early exit from the page.
10) Non Engaging Landing Page
The well engaging landing page can always work wonders and it also helps to keep the visitors back on the web pages. If the landing page is not at all engaging and attractive then you would not be able to make the visitors stay on the page and they would soon leave the page once they find the web page less engaging.

Hi George..
Thanks for your article george…
I have one question….is ‘Bounce rate’ affects your ranking in SERP ?
As you said that high bounce rate indicate that your site is not having quality content or it may be other way that search engine is showing your site on top for a wrong keyword.
George says
Hi Sandeep, yes..high bounce rate is always a matter of concern. It is something that signals about the quality of the content and you need to make sure that the bounce rate is made down by getting quality content on your website. A website having high bounce usually do not enjoy a better SERP..
